Langston, California’s heyday was short-lived, however. By 1906, Charles and his family had abandoned their thriving business, with their last recorded transactions taking place in 1910. Charles died in Washington DC in November of 1909 after living a life of remarkable achievement.
Though faded from the historical record, Langston, California is an important reminder of African-American independence during a time of widespread anti-black discrimination and segregation. Charles Langston’s determination and spirit of entrepreneurship provided hope for African-Americans, both in his time and today.
As such, it stands as a testament to the extraordinary resilience of the African-American spirit.
