Traveling to an exotic destination with your new spouse can be quite an adventure. You may be picturing a non-stop week of eating crepes on the Seine or getting serenaded by a Gondolier, but it is not going to be all fun and games. Any seasoned traveller knows that when it comes to leaving the country, you need to expect the unexpected.
Here are a few things to remember before you plan a honeymoon to another country (and these count double if you’ve never left The States before).
Traveling and Waiting are Often Synonymous – When you see other people’s pictures from their exotic vacation abroad, you only see the highlights. What you don’t see (and what many people don’t expect on their first time out of the country) is that getting to a photo-worthy destination means hours of waiting at an airport, train station, or bus stop – and sometimes all three in one day.
Being Frustrated is Bound to Happen – If you are traveling to a country where English is not the first language, there is going to be a language barrier of some kind. Even in destinations frequented by tourists, you are no doubt going to run into people who don’t speak your language or understand your request. While this may seem obvious, when you are tired, stressed, or jet-lagged, it can become incredibly frustrating. Be sure to prepare yourself for the fact that you are the foreigner, not the other way around.
Prepare to See Another Side of Yourself… And Your Partner – If you have never travelled with your partner before, you might be in for a surprise. Traveling abroad tests how well you can handle very specific challenges and deal with situations that lie outside of your comfort zone. You will lean so many things on your honeymoon, one of them being exactly how you and your partner work together when in a difficult situation or two.
Don’t Expect to Totally Relaxed – Unless you are posting up at an all-inclusive resort, staying at a hotel and eating at restaurants in a foreign country can sometimes be a little stressful. Don’t think that you will be able to kick back and relax the entire vacation, being a visitor in a foreign land means constantly being on your toes and on your best behavior.
You Will Make Memories That Last a Lifetime – While traveling out of the country is a unique brand of challenging, when it is all over you will have memories that you will never forget. Along with Instagram pictures that will make all of your friends envious, you will forge a deep & unique bond with your spouse that will never go away.
