NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND’S HOTEL VIKING ANNOUNCES SEASONAL PROGRAMMING WITH ACCLAIMED WOLFFER ESTATE OF EAST HAMPTON

Newport, Rhode Island’s Hotel Viking is celebrating its 95th anniversary this year along with the destination’s iconic roots. Following significant renovations and upgrades, including a brand-new Spa Fjor (debuted fall 2020), Hotel Viking today announces a collaboration with one of the East Coast’s favorite summer wine purveyors and the creator of “Summer in a Bottle,” the acclaimed Wolffer Estate of East Hampton.

Beginning on June 12 and taking place Saturdays from June through August, a brand-new Wolffer pop-up experience will be located on the One Bellevue Patio where guests and locals can enjoy small bites, tasting flights, Rose on draft, and a variety of wine selections from their Summer Inspired Collection. Top of Newport, Hotel Viking’s popular rooftop bar and event space has also reopened, drawing locals and travelers alike to soak in the views of the gilded-age mansions, stunning New England sunsets and nearby marina.

To indulge fully in this collaboration, Hotel Viking has developed the “Wolffer Weekends” package experience for guests to enjoy. This includes:

  • Two-night stay (Friday check in; Sunday check out) *Black out dates apply
  • Complimentary Tasting and Small-Bites Experience
  • Wolffer Estate Summer Inspired Collection Bottle upon arrival/ in-room gift
  • KJP (Kiel James Patrick) Hat upon arrival/ in-room gift

During the Gilded Age, Newport was undergoing rapid economic growth; wealthy East Coast families were building summer cottages and mansions in order to spend their summers in breezy Newport. Pulitzer Prize winning American novelist Edith Wharton even wrote about the social scene in her novel The Age of Innocence. She had a summer cottage in Newport called Land’s End. In the early 20th century, a group of local investors saw the need for a grand hotel in Newport. Through the sale of common stock, a half million dollars was raised. The sum was needed for the erection of a hotel of such scale that it would attract tourists to the City by the Sea. On May 25, 1926, The Hotel Viking opened to the public with two lavish parties.

Known as the “City of Summer White Houses” by the 1950s, Newport remains a popular vacation destination thanks to its storied past and as well as its emergence as a vibrant, contemporary destination filled with boutique shops, restaurants, live music and beloved summer pursuits.

General Manager Meaghan Walsh comments, “The pandemic has challenged our cities, big and small, and we are delighted to offer a new set of experiences for our guests. Newport really embodies this idea of The City of Summer – a city by the sea, we offer the best of both worlds. After a year of hibernation in both cities and suburbs, we are the perfect spot to revel in summer festivities and reclaim lost moments.”
