These tips and links will help you when planning a LGBT friendly family vacation. Major hotel chains, including Wyndham Hotels and Resorts and Hilton, are actively marketing to the LGBT community and LGBT families, in particular. In a recent survey by Community Marketing 68% of gay men and lesbians with families said it was more important that a destination be “child friendly” over LGBT friendly.

As H. Luiz Martinez explains in his article “8 Travel Tips for Gay Family Getaways” for Passport.com:

“When searching for amazing gay family getaways, it is important to understand that “gay friendly” may differ from gay “family” friendly. Some people may be okay with same-gender couples, but may be intolerant of same-gender couples with children.”

He suggests calling ahead and having a conversation with the resort or hotel.

Destinations abroad are becoming more inclusive, but foreign travel requires some research prior to travel, including questions like:

  • Are same sex marriages accepted in this country?
  • Will my same sex partner be recognized as my spouse?
  • Will we be recognized as the legal guardians of our children?

When traveling abroad first visit the LGBTI page of the US State Dept. The advice from the Department of State site is:

“Before choosing one’s international destination, LGBTI travelers should carefully consider the laws and biases of their international destination and decide how open one can be regarding one’s sexual orientation or gender identity.  Personal judgment and knowledge of local laws and customs before one goes will help ensure your safety.”

This site has information on any destination you are considering and this article offers details on how to safely travel in foreign countries.

Be sure to enroll in STEP, Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, a free service of the Department of State. Enrolling your trip signs you up for updates on alerts, warnings, etc. and helps the nearest consulate or embassy to locate you in case of emergency.

If traveling to Europe, you may want to take a peek at The Gay Families Tourism Campaign website:

“The Gay Families Tourism Campaign aims to persuade European countries, regions, cities and popular tourist destinations to proclaim clearly and publicly that they recognize and welcome the legal rights of gay visitors from around the world.”
