Tell us about your wedding! What was the inspiration behind your day?

We wanted to embrace the Coast and the State of Virginia as our new home.     We decided to get our Marriage License in Colonial Williamsburg, to have our Rehearsal on the water at a Yacht Club and to be married in the Historic Cavalier Hotel.     From our Rehearsal to our Post Wedding Brunch, we incorporated subtle hints of Virginia :   Oyster (Bridesmaid dress color, food selections),  Pearls (jewelry, pins, tie bars), Navy, Nautical Stripes, Seafood, and even Virginia Peanuts in our favors.

Did you personalize the day in any way (food trucks, guest entertainment etc.)? What were some of your favorite parts of your wedding?

As mentioned in other questions, our favorite parts of our wedding were that we had so many special moments for our guests and spent a great deal of time acknowledging our wedding party, family and every guest in the room.    We personally thanked every table in our Rehearsal speech and explained the “story” of how they connected with us and how they formed a table.     We personalized our Koozies, Napkins, place settings, stir sticks, etc.     Each guest was given a Gold Acrylic Name Tag on their dinner plate.     Our favor to our guests was a Godinger Crystal Candy Dish with lid.   We filled them with our favorite treats from Texas (Pralines), Tennessee (Googoo Clusters) and Virginia (Peanuts).      Each guest was given a gift bag with our own personal Crest Monogrammed on the outside.

How did you meet? Tell us about the proposal.

We met at a restaurant/bar.   We were both out, separately, with friends for the evening.    I had told my friends I was going home, but eventually they realized I was still there and asked about my plans.    I had seen Caldwell from across the room and said, “I am not leaving until I know that person.”  There was just something about his smile and the way he carried himself that made me very interested.  Little did I know he was also interested in meeting me.    I proposed about 6 years later.    Caldwell’s family has a vacation property in Michigan that has been in the family for years and he grew up going there as a child.    The family asked me to go for several years and I thought it was the perfect place to propose.    I mailed a letter requesting Caldwell’s hand in Marriage and sent the letter to his two sisters and his parents.    I also sent the letter to my Mother and my sister to include them from the start.    Each of our family members wrote me back a letter, which I mounted on wood boards and brought with me to Michigan.    We had the family all dress in White & Khaki and told everyone we were taking family pictures that evening by the lake.     I proposed to Caldwell that evening and we surprised him with Champagne and all the letters from our family blessing our marriage, then we took photos to celebrate our engagement.
What was the most anticipated or special moment of your wedding day?

Every single moment. Truly. Our wedding had such variety from room to room and such a good flow to the evening, that it felt like a journey vs.  something you just attend.    We looked forward to moving through every moment.     We both loved every moment we had with our Mother’s; they walked us down the aisle, danced with each of us, and were both a highlight of every room they entered.    The biggest, unexpected, surprise was how incredible our guests were.   People still talk about this feeling of joy and love in the room that radiated from all of our guests.     We saw a large number of our guests become friends with people they had not met before.

Do you have any wedding planning or marriage advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day?

My wedding planning advice would be to put extra effort into the guests.   Often times, the wedding is so focused on the couple, that the guests are overlooked.    We spent a great deal of time thinking about their comfort, what they would be doing, where they would be sitting, special favors, and special moments to thank them for being a part of our lives.    Our wedding was the best day of our lives,  because everyone raved about the evening.     They talked about how well we treated them for months.
